Jacky Nobody by Anne de Roo
The story is set in the 1840s. Jacky the adopted son of missionaries, lives in New Zealand 's Bay of Islands at the time of the Maori chief Hone Heke's rebellion.
He is bewildered by the growing conflict between the two cultures and his increasing admiration for Heke. With his friends, Noah, the tough young Pakeha, and Matiu, the gentle young mission Maori, he watches Heke's peaceful rebellion move towards a climax of fire and bloodshed.
The story can be read by older primary school age children or read to younger ones.
